Battling Against Adversity: Lehigh

Respect for others and understanding diversity are essential for effective leadership at Lehigh and throughout life. My parents instilled the golden rule in me early on: treat others as you would like to be treated. This guidance shaped my approach to leadership, emphasizing empathy, collaboration, and inclusion. Gender equality is not just a principle for me; it’s deeply personal and rooted in my family history and experiences.

I have always loved women’s sports. Growing up, I was inspired by the firm and determined women in my family, both on and off the court. My aunt and mother were basketball players; my sister currently plays, and my grandfather was a dedicated coach for women’s basketball. Watching and supporting them taught me the value of equal opportunity and the significance of where everyone can thrive, regardless of gender. These experiences strengthened my admiration for women’s sports and enhanced my understanding of how equitable representation uplifts entire communities. creating platform

As Student Council President, I’ve committed to ensuring everyone feels heard and included, regardless of their background. When organizing, I collaborated with students from various faiths to create an event that honored multiple beliefs. The experience underscored the importance of bringing together individuals with diverse perspectives, essential for building an inclusive community prayer service. I’ve applied these lessons as a tutor. I supported a student named Marcus, juggling academics with considerable responsibilities at home. Tutoring him demanded empathy and adaptability, and it taught me that understanding others’ unique challenges is vital for effective leadership.

Through my involvement in varsity basketball, tennis, swimming, cross country, track, and golf, I’ve witnessed how diversity strengthens a team. My teammates come from different backgrounds, and I’ve prioritized supporting their development as athletes and individuals. Mentoring younger players has shown me the value of creating an environment where everyone feels confident in their role, regardless of gender or experience. Mentoring players aligns with my broader goal of fostering equitable opportunities in all areas of life.

I’ve also been inspired by my female swim coaches, who exemplify leadership through strength, discipline, and empathy. One coach worked tirelessly with a struggling teammate, motivating the team to rally in support. Their example showed me that great leaders uplift others and build a culture of growth and support. I strive to emulate these qualities, whether mentoring on the court, helping younger swimmers, or encouraging inclusivity in student council initiatives.

Looking ahead, I envision a gender-equitable world where everyone can access the same opportunities, free from bias or barriers. At Lehigh, I want to champion initiatives like mentorship programs for women in leadership or panels celebrating achievements across genders. I also want to contribute to a campus culture that values equitable representation, whether through athletics, academics, or community service.

My parents’ respect for others guides my actions, primarily my work to create inclusive environments. My passion for gender equity stems from my personal experiences and commitment to treating others with dignity. At Lehigh, I am excited to further these values and help build a community where everyone, regardless of gender, can succeed and thrive.
